Make Your Own is a series of 18 diagrams with texts. The diagrams depict stages in the making of an object. Each diagram is accompanied by three short texts, about three artists. I have anonymised each text* so they are now about a ‘he’, a ‘you’ and a ‘she’.
The photograph above is a draft version of the piece for exhibition. A book version of the piece is viewable here Make your own – book
*The names of the artists are available. Please contact W P Thomas.

I am an artist and researcher, currently doing a PhD on essaying and artistic practice.
By essaying I mean a personal, reflective, resistant, open-ended and exploratory way of being.
My inspirations come from a long line of essayists and people who seem to essay, like: Michel de Montaigne, Alexander Kluge, Chris Marker, Harun Farocki, Michael Rakowitz, Maggie Nelson, Brian Dillon, Annie Ernaux, Gordon Hall, Nora Krug, and more.
The work presented on this site is all from before my doctorate began. A new site, showing recent work is under construction.
