Line drawing (return from Birmingham)

This drawing documents a train journey. I drew the vertical lines continuously as I travelled, drawing them freehand and trying to make them as straight as possible.

I drew at a table, facing towards the back of the train.

The wobbles in the lines correspond with movements that the train made as we traveled. They are also signs of my inability to draw a straight line.

The numbers among the lines refer to numbered notes on the left-hand page (verso). These notes are mostly of words I overheard, mainly from other passengers; words I saw, on newspapers and in text messages; or in a few cases, they are sketches of things I noticed during the journey.

The journey, the documentation process and the physical drawing, together form the work. They are all equally important parts of it.
