These are roughs for a project I did in 1997 for a short-lived magazine, Vice Versa.
The portraits are of strangers I met in London, mostly on the Southbank. I explained the project to them and asked them if I could take their photograph. Some of them said no. I never knew their names. The aphorisms are by well-known cultural figures of the 20th century, on the question What is Art? They are identified here by first name only.

I am an artist and researcher, currently doing a PhD on essaying and artistic practice.
By essaying I mean a personal, reflective, resistant, open-ended and exploratory way of being.
My inspirations come from a long line of essayists and people who seem to essay, like: Michel de Montaigne, Alexander Kluge, Chris Marker, Harun Farocki, Michael Rakowitz, Maggie Nelson, Brian Dillon, Annie Ernaux, Gordon Hall, Nora Krug, and more.
The work presented on this site is all from before my doctorate began. A new site, showing recent work is under construction.
